At any given time, from one quarter to one half of all adult Americans are on some sort of diet.

AT THE TABLE

Here are some tips for your at-home meals:

• Consider using small plates for your meals. A full bread-and-butter plate or salad plate is likely to be perceived by your mind as a full plate of food.

• Pay close attention to every bite you put into your mouth.

• Serve your plate in the kitchen directly from the cooking pans and don’t go back for second helpings!

• Drink a large glass water even before you take your first bite of a meal.

• Eat slowly. Thoroughly chew your food—a good trick for slowing your eating is to set your food down between each bite or to put down your fork between each bite and not pick it up again until you have thoroughly chewed and swallowed what is in your mouth and followed it with a sip of water.

• Even if you are eating alone, sit down at a dinner table to eat. Don’t mindlessly munch away while watching television.

PANTRY-PURGING CHECKLIST

Remove from your pantry, kitchen cupboards and shelves all of the following:

• peanut butter

• any item that has a long list of preservatives

• margarine

• Crisco or other shortening

• all products that contain aspartame (NutraSweet)

• all products that have sugar as the first ingredient on the label

• all products that have hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats

• all white flour

• all white rice

• all bread and pasta products that are not whole-grain

• all processed cereals that are not whole-grain

• all aspartame sweetened products

ACTION STEPS FOR WEEK #6

• Purge your pantry and kitchen cupboards and shelves this week!

• Eliminate white rice from your eating plan. (Eat only small portions of wild rice.)

• Eliminate regular pasta from your eating plan. (Later, after you have reached your fat-loss goal, you may add whole-grain pasta to your eating program in limited quantities and only occasionally.)
